About ESSIC
Who we are
Established in 2004, the International Society for the Study of IC/BPS (ESSIC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the understanding and management of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS).
Its members include scientists, researchers, and healthcare professionals from around the world who are engaged in the study, diagnosis, and treatment of IC/BPS.
ESSIC’s primary objectives are to promote research into both IC/BPS and IC/HLD, facilitate the exchange of scientific knowledge and clinical experience, and advance understanding of the condition through the organization of meetings, conferences, and other educational activities.
Interstitial Cystitis / Bladder Pain Syndrome
Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is a heterogenous symptom syndrome. Features include chronic pain, pressure or discomfort related to the bladder, together with urinary frequency day and night, and/or an overwhelming, urgent need to void due to pain.
The symptoms may increase on bladder filling and be relieved on bladder emptying. Diagnosis is based on the exclusion of other identifiable causes of the symptoms. Patients are classified into two distinct subtypes: Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome and Interstitial Cystitis/Hunner Lesion Disease.
